World’s 2nd 3D Printed Dress

We’ve seen 3D printed food, weapons and organs, so why not fully customizable apparel that’s precision fit the contours of your body?

That’s what designer Michael Schmidt and architect Francis Bitonti aimed to do this week, though they took the idea to a whole ‘nother level.

Inspired by the Fibonacci Sequence (adding up the previous two numbers to reach a third), the team built a black mesh 17-piece lacquered evening gown, and blinged it out with over 13,000 Swarovski crystals.

The dress was on display at an unveiling at Ace Hotel in NYC on March 4th.

As we discover new, more flexible and affordable forms of 3D printing ink, we’ll be able to take this concept to mind-blowing and wardrobe expanding places.

These types of custom apparel will be specialty items at first, but with the commercialization of 3D printing technology, we’ll all be able to design and print our own clothing.

Ladies, shopping just got a lot more fun.
