Whether you’re a smoker or not, you’ve probably noticed the growing problem all over the globe that is the cigarette filter or butt.

Besides the obvious, there’s a lot that people don’t know about cigarette butts. Many cigarette butts are toxic, they release carcinogenic pollutants that can harm wildlife. Cellulose acetate breathed in from filters has been know to cause lung damage in some cases.

Cigarette butts are the most numerically frequent litter in the world; 4.5 Trillion cigarette butts are littered each year. Believe it or not, current filters are actually biodegradable, but they can take as much as 15-20 years to fully decompose. As you might imagine, these butts have been adding up quick. What can we do?

A company appropriately named Green Butts has an amazing and exemplary solution for this worldwide nuisance. Green Butts has patented an idea that not only introduces the most rapidly degrading, safest to smoke butts known to man, the butt can actually be planted in soil or a compost bin! During production, seeds are safely encompassed in an all-natural filter that can sprout into wildflowers!

Many individuals haven’t switched to electronic cigarettes because the taste and experience just isn’t the same, but with Green Butts, it is. Not only that, the tobacco used in Green Butt cigarettes is natural and additive free. Green Butts will break down in one month, the same length of time of a banana peel. There are currently plans to sell these filters alone for those who enjoy rolling their own cigarettes as well. Green Butts aims to have their product on shelves by late 2012!

Here’s a description straight from the companies website, www.green-butts.com. “Greenbutts are manufactured from 100% all-natural and compostable materials. Natural flax, cotton and de-gummed hemp form the filter body. Natural starch combined with pure water help bind the filter elements as they are spun together. Nothing synthetic or artifical. Simple is better.”

Our planet is too rare and fragile to continue adding quadrillions of pieces of trash every decade. People have been smoking for over 1,500 years, so they probably aren’t going to stop now. It’s surprising that it took this long to find a more friendly and quicker dissolving alternative, but the wildflower kick is nothing short of amazing. This is the type of innovation that will get everyone excited about making a change. Hopefully it won’t encourage people to start smoking just to add to their gardens. As long as the Green Butts product is safe, it’s hard to see how this won’t be a global hit.

How do you feel about this radical smokin’ change?
