The light bulb, a modern marvel, has become bland and underappreciated. How did we let this happen? What can we do to bring that spark back?

Philips has introduced Hue, a wi-fi enabled personal lighting system for your home. Simply change out your boring old bulbs and hook up a little box to your router to alter your world forever. You can instantly and wirelessly sync your entire home’s lighting to your phone or iPad with the Hue app.

Undoubtedly the coolest part is, with app in hand, you can then choose any color(s) you want from the spectrum and stand in awe as they invade your home. You can even snatch colors from photos you have on your smart device.

Philips did their research and even included different ‘light recipes’, settings scientifically proven to help you relax, increase productivity and energize your world.

Sound too good to be true? Check out the video below.

I bought these. They are really amazing. When turned on from the wall switch, they power up like normal white LEDs. But once on, they are fully controllable from an iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, or Android device (I don’t have an Android device). Even more amazing, they can be controlled when you’re away from home. While the hardware is fantastic (and expensive) the software is lacking in ease of use. It works, but it’s not polished. For example, it’s possible but hard to group bulbs by room or area so they can be controlled together. I expect improvements in software will come, but it’s certainly good enough to begin playing with these things.
