The segway, the invention that was supposed to revolutionize human transportation, now has some competition. Honda, makers of some of the more dependable vehicles on the road, is trying to change the way we move through our homes and workplaces.

“The personal mobility device, designed for harmony with people”

If you enjoy exercise, the UNI-CUB is not for you. It features an uber-comfortable saddle for you to relax on. It also features two laid back navigation options: lean in any direction and the UNI-CUB will respond and take you there, a la the segway. If leaning is too much work for you, then you can control the UNI-CUB with an app from your smart phone.

All joking aside, the invention has some nice possibilities for aiding the handicapped, providing them with a comparable experience to walking. The UNI-CUB keeps the user at an eye level, and allows for easy maneuverability.

Omni-Directional Control

Honda’s UNI-CUB features the world’s first omni-directional system allows the user to have the same “forward, backward, lateral and diagonal (movement) that people enjoy when walking.”

The unit runs on a lithium-ion battery, and has a range of six km, though the current model isn’t a speed burner, traveling at 6 km/hr.

Honda is currently testing the product out in a number of difference countries in a plethora of different environments both inside and out.

This type of human transport seems destined to be the norm for many. Though the company boasts about its compact design, it’s not difficult to imagine a later model being much smaller.
