With gas prices an uncertainty and more and more individuals moving to active and healthy lifestyles, people are moving to bikes are a primary form of transportation. Finding a good, safe spot to park a bike has been a problem as they take up a lot of space, and are often the target of theft.

Finding a spot to park your boat is another story altogether. Leaving it docked can be expensive, and buying a trailer is often a pain. Some brilliant minds have sought to address these spacial issues, and have actually created working models of a bike and a boat that can fold up and be worn as a backpack!

When it comes to the portable backpack bike, there are a couple different prototypes out there. Taiwanese designer Chang Ting Jen devised a lightweight model in 2008. Her design is built for smaller body types, as it’s made mostly of plastic and weighs in at around 12 pounds. The plastic can only handle so much, but it’s not difficult to imagine something sturdier coming along when a supermaterial such as graphene becomes more commercially viable. It’s pretty basic, but it does have brakes which is always nice, and it travels seamlessly hands-free. While it does look a little awkward, the convenience and versatility cannot be understated.

Another fold-up bike available to you today is the Bergmonch. Leave it to the German’s to design a stylish f=and efficient method of transportation. The Bergmonch has an aluminum frame that weighs just over 20 pounds. It’s designed for difficult uphill and downhill terrain, featuring off-road tires and shocks. This gorgeous model is complete with a storage compartment for some nourishment and a net for your helmet. You can pick one up right now for $1,499!

A company aptly named ‘FoldBoat’ offers another handy wearable product that will fit comfortably on your back; this one will get you around when you’re surrounded by H2O. The portable, foldable boat is made out of a single sheet of plastic, and folds to dimensions of 1m x 50cm x 60 cm. It’s not just a boat however, it comes complete with oars that are cut from the same plastic sheet as the boat, as well as waterproof comfort cusions that double as a flotation device. Pretty incredible stuff.

Just when you thought everything had been thought of and invented, you read about things like this. It just goes to show that when there is a any sort of problem out there, we can and will find a way to fix it. Is there any other convenient foldable or portable technology that you’ve seen out there or would like to see soon?
